- Manuel Jimbrez?, MC from San Jose University is the MC and welcomes all to the 5th Int' Conf on Social Workers and states the theme of the conference as "Taking Care of Ourselves"; then dedicates the conference to "We the living, we the caregivers, we the people in the front lines". He the introduces : Maureen O'Niell representing the Social Workers Aids Network (SWAN) [one of the sponsors of the conference], San Francisco Chapter; who comments on the Social Workers Network and the pendemic and the fact that S.F. has surpassed 10,000 deaths from AIDS and the loss to the Social Workers family in S. F. from AIDS; M.C. then reads letters of greeting from San Jose University S.W. Association and He alos states that he is the first gay president of the the California Chapter of Social Workers. then introduces Dr. Gary Llloyd who gives greetings from Dr. Albert Henwell, Assoc. Dean at Boston College and from Father Daniel Monan, President of Boston College and from June Gary Hops, Dean of Graduate School of S.W. of Boston College. Henwell goes on to say that s.w. is examining and should be doing in s.w. practice, education, research and ecducation in relation to AIDS. Lloyd then introduces Dr. Vincent Lynch of Boston College; Dr. Lynch gives personal testimony and to thank SWAN. M.C. then introduces Susan Dumont - member of SWAN and she intoduces the speaker Daniel Ostro - an out gay man and a Jew who was given the distinguished Philosophy In Action Award by Catholic Health Care West. Daniel dedicates his keynote to Terence O'Grady - psychiatric social worker at St. Mary's who died of AIDS; Danield then goes on to discuss his parner who is dying of ADS and the elements of caregivers and the experience of those who face diseases and those who died of various life threatening diseases and teh population groups.. He quoates Ravious? that epidemics effect of the care givers role: 1) assumption of persons daily rsponsibility 2) disruptions of personl routines 3) balance the responsibility of teh well versus all family members. Daniel also goes on to address the limited resources to address the needs of care givers when tangible needs of healthcare are not adequately addressed.
