The first Fashion Cares in Toronto was inspired by the same-titled event in Great Britain formed to make the British aware of the AIDS crisis..

The co-founders of the 1987 event held at the Diamond Club were Syd Beder and Rick Mugford, where the funds raised were given to the fledgling AIDS Committee of Toronto [ACT], which continues to be the beneficiary today.
