Notes
"The ban on blood donation for men who have sex with men is discrimnatory and not based on science--Dr. William Kobler, Trustee for the American Medical Association", "The current policy does not take any of the following into account: the scientific advancements in HIV testing accuracy since 1985; the donor's status in a long-term closed relationship; the use of protection and risk levels of different types of sexual interaction" "Help put an end to this discriminatory policy. Log-on to www.endtheban.ca to send an email to the federal Minister of Health, Rona Ambrose" "Health Canada says that, regardless of the precautions taken or their health status, gay men must choose to either abstain from having sex for five years or donate life-saving blood, but can have as much unprotected sex with women as they'd like without the same restrictions. The deferral period for a man who has sex with other men should be the same as deferral periods for heterosexual behaviour. If the screening procedure were based on behaviours that are scientifically proven to be higher-risk for transmitting blood-borne pathogens and not on outdated stereotypes of queer and trans people, Canada's blood system would be safer, more responsive to potential infections, and not unnecessarily ban people from saving someone's life."
